Merrill Dedicates Street Sign Honoring Loved Longtime Resident Roger “Budda” English

MERRILL – On Monday August 26, an honorary street sign unveiling was held at the corner of West Main and Wright streets in Merrill.

The City of Merrill began the honorary street sign project in 2023 to recognize residents who have left their mark on the community. Today’s honoree was Roger “Budda” English. City leaders, members of Merrill’s Historical Society and family members gathered for the unveiling of the new honorary street sign. Placing the sign at that location was done so purposefully, as English walked to work through the intersection daily enroute to Lincoln County Bank in Merrill where he was employed for more than four decades.

The Merrill High School graduate’s resume includes attending UW Stevens Point before serving in the US Army during the Korean War. English then returned to Merrill and served as an alderman on the City Council for 25 years. Budda was also loved Blue Jay athletics as both a referee and coach. He also served with the Merrill Lions and was a member of the local VFW.

The city has four more sign dedications planned through the end of 2024.
