Lincoln County Death Team July 8th Meeting Notes

LINCOLN COUNTY – The Lincoln County Death Team held their latest meeting on Monday July 8 in the Land Services Conference Room. County Coroner Valerie Caylor stated that she is seeing an average of 28 deaths per month in Lincoln County, with most of those in the 70 years or older category. Discussions took place during the meeting surrounding potential preventative initiatives specific to postpartum follow up. Those initiatives could include follow up mailings, phone calls and home visits. The team’s next meeting is scheduled for October 14.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Report Week Ending July 14

LINCOLN COUNTY – Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted 42 traffic stops last week. There was a report of one crash with multiple injuries on US Hwy 8 near Honey Rd, in the Township of Wilson. Deputies from both Lincoln and Oneida counties were dispatched to the scene.  There were 33 security checks performed. Deputies also responded to 2 calls involving cars hitting deer and followed up on 14 calls for unsafe driving. The 911 center took seven nuisance calls. There were two hang-up calls.

LINCOLN COUNTY – The Lincoln County Administrative and Legislative Committee met on Tuesday July 2nd at the Government Services Center. UW Extension Dept Head Art Lersch announced his retirement at the meeting. Candidates to fill the position are yet TBD. Antigo Mayor Resigns, Interim Mayor Selected

ANTIGO – The Antigo city council has announced that they have accepted the resignation of Mayor Terry Brand who will be moving out of the city, making him ineligible to hold the position effective immediately. Tom Bauknecht, Fourth District Alder has accepted the title of Interim Mayor. He will fill the position through the 2025 Spring election. This leaves an opening for the District 4 Alder position. The Council is accepting applications and cover letters from residents interested in filling the position.

Merrill Fire Department Report Week Ending July 14

MERRILL – The Merrill Fire Department responded to 40 calls last week, bringing the total for 2024 to 1193 calls. There were 2 motor vehicle accidents that resulted in injuries. There were 29 calls requesting EMS services, excluding the 2 accidents that resulted in injuries. The department responded to 3 fire calls, 2 were grass fires and the third was a recreational vehicle fire. EMS responders were also dispatched to rescue an individual at a local swimming area.

Lincoln County Farm Reports Wolf Attacks

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports that a beef calf was killed and an adult cow injured by wolves recently on a local farm in the Town of Pine River. The depredation and injury were verified by the US Department pf Agriculture on June 8, 2024. The DNR said that discussions are taking place with the livestock producer regarding non-lethal abatement options. Lincoln County Highway Committee July 10 Meeting Summary

MERRILL – The Lincoln County Highway Committee held their monthly meeting on July 10th in the County Service Center. Two discussions took place surrounding Highway 107. The route is now open for ATV / UTV use on the stretch that passes through the Town of Rock Falls. Committee member Ken Wickham said WisDOT has reported that they do not currently support lowering the speed limit on that stretch of road. 18-Year-Old Driver Arrested in Merrill On Alcohol And Drug Related Charges

MERRILL – On Thursday July 4th, a Lincoln County Deputy on patrol stopped to check on a vehicle sitting with its hazard lights blinking at CTH’s Q and Z just south of Merrill in the Town of Scott. Upon making contact with the 18-year-old male driver, the deputy noticed an odor of intoxicants. The driver agreed to standard field sobriety tests.
