WPS Offers Tips During National Dam Safety Awareness Day
As part of National Dam Safety Awareness Day, officials took time this past weekend to recognize safety around the many dams scattered throughout the Northwoods.
Wisconsin Public service, who maintains a series of hydroelectric facilities around the state including the facility in Merrill, offered the following tips for those who choose to enjoy recreating around dams:
- Always stay outside of buoyed and roped off areas, obeying warning signs and sirens. Swimming is not recommended near dams
- If you are boating, when you are near a dam keep your motor running so that you are always prepared to maneuver your craft or leave the area quickly
- Be aware of rapidly changing water conditions, as well as currents above and below the dam.
More information regarding safety around dams is available on the WPS website.
