New Website Domain Coming Soon For Lincoln County Government

As a part of a plan to provide increased security, simplify email addresses and update their website to current standards, the Lincoln County government could soon be getting a new website domain. Currently the county is using co.lincoln.wi.us. The county board approved a resolution this past week that clears the way for a transition to lincolncountywi.gov. The ‘.gov’ addresses are exclusive to US government agencies and organizations.

IT Director Travis Spoehr briefed the Board ahead of the vote, noting that the change has been discussed in past meetings. Presently, application and registration of .gov domains have been waived for counties and municipalities.

The resolution states that the Wisconsin Elections Commission will make .gov a requirement for future electronic elections communications. Northwoods counties that have already transitioned to the new suffix include Oneida and Vilas.

Spoehr noted that the specific domain name must include the ‘wi’ since there are 36 other Lincoln counties across the US.

No specific timeline for the transition has been communicated. The current domain will continue to be used for now, with plans for a staggered migration.
